About Us
We tell our customers, "we would rather you not buy anything and have good things to say about us, than to feel like you were pressured into something you didn't want".
A brief history of our store: In late 2009, Darren Patrick received a call from the owner of Mountain Music who had been trying (unsuccessfully) to find someone to take over the store and save it from going out of business. Mountain Music had been open since 2004 and was known as Chattanooga's store for folk and bluegrass instruments. But after six years, Mountain Music was in trouble. In an old, run down house in Red Bank, TN with an owner who had let the inventory dwindle down to just 14 instruments, time was running out for this little music store.
Darren, at the time, owned a small but thriving music school in Harrison, TN. And although he had successful experience running other music stores in the past, he would be an unlikely buyer since he was a drummer/percussionist; because everybody knows drummers don't run bluegrass stores!
Up to this point, the idea of owning a typical music store was not very appealing, as there were plenty of those already. But Mountain Music wasn't a typical music store, having chosen the "folky" road. So, Darren took a chance on Mountain Music and as of January 1, 2010, it would live on under new ownership. Slowly building up the inventory again, the store quickly outgrew the little house and in early 2011 relocated to nearby downtown Chattanooga. By 2014, busting at the seams again, the store relocated to a larger facility on the south side of Chattanooga. Fast forward to 2018, a phone call this time would once again force the store to move. The landlord had called to say a large grocery store was taking over the property and Mountain Music would have to find yet another new home. That new home would be in the busy Highland Plaza shopping center on the north side of town in Hixson.
Over the years, many music stores in the Chattanooga area have closed their doors forever (over 20 at last count) so there aren't a lot of the "typical" music stores left. But Mountain Music has continued to grow, picking up where others have left off. Originally only selling acoustic folk instruments, Mountain Music has become the music store in Chattanooga that sells just about anything.
